Maricopa County Assessor Paul D. Petersen, accused of human smuggling, has no plans to resign from office
That’s according to his attorney.
Peterson is accused of smuggling pregnant women from the Marshall Islands to the U.S. to give their babies up for adoption.
Investigators have reported at least 70 Marshallese births in the U.S. with ties to Petersen’s private adoption firm between 2015-2019.
Petersen, who’s licensed in Utah and Arizona, was indicted on October 8 after a multi-state investigation involving officials in Arizona, Utah, and Arkansas.
According to his attorney, Petersen is likely to make his next appearance in federal court in the Western District of Arkansas.
Authorities in Arizona and Utah stressed they have no interest in interfering with adoptions that have already taken place.
