Attorney General William Barr directs immigration judges to deny bond hearings for asylum seeking migrants beginning in just 90 days.
The new policy reversal could lead to thousands of immigrants to be detained for months or years until their cases are heard before a judge.
Under the new policy, asylum seekers could only be released from detention if the Department of Homeland Security grants parole.
The ruling won’t take effect for 90 days.
The ACLU and other groups have already promised legal challenges.
