Christmas morning shooting incident in Clifton

CLIFTON, Colo. (KREX) — The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) responded to a call at 8:15 a.m. on Christmas morning on the 500 block of Clifton Way.

According to the report, when deputies arrived the saw an individual get into a car and take off at a high rate of speed. The individual then fired a gun out of the window.

Deputies pursued the vehicle, which at one point jumped the median and was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-70B. Ultimately, deputies were able to stop the vehicle near E 1/2 and 32 1/2 roads.

The driver was found in the vehicle with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital, where he later died. No other injuries were reported.

The Mesa County Coroner is responsible for determining the cause and manner of death, and releasing the person’s name after proper notifications are made.

Colorado State Patrol and 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office are assisting MCSO in this ongoing investigation.
