The Federal Communications Commission is recommending that Congress designate a three-digit number for the national suicide prevention hotline. The FCC recommends the use of the digits 9-8-8 because it’s a shorter number that is easier to remember. Currently, calls to the ten-digit suicide hotline number are routed to the closest certified crisis center. Last year, counselors with the hotline answered over two-point-two million calls and over 100,000 online chats.
