Darius Leonard ran an interception back 64 yards for a score and picked off another in the fourth quarter to secure South Carolina State’s 14-9 win over Howard on Saturday.
Leonard gave South Carolina State (2-3, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a 7-0 lead with his first interception with 6:19 left in the second period. Leonard, who finished with 14 tackles, thwarted Howard with his second interception in the fourth when the Bison had driven to SCSU’s 31 with 9:28 left.
Caleb York hit Mykal Moody on a 5-yard scoring play with 12:41 remaining in the final quarter for the winning touchdown in this defensive struggle.
Dakota Labofsky kicked a 24-yard field goal and Jason Collins hit Kyle Anthony on a 6-yard scoring strike to give Howard a 9-0 lead with 7:28 left in the third.
Anthony Philyaw had 160 yards rushing for Howard (1-6, 1-3).
