Missouri Legislature Approves Restrictive Abortion Law

The Missouri State House has passed a bill that bans abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy, following its approval by the State Senate.

The “Missouri Stands for The Unborn Act” passed 109 to 46 following passionate debate on both sides.

The measure specifies that doctors must check for a heartbeat before giving an abortion.

And, if a heartbeat is detected, that doctor cannot perform an abortion unless the woman’s health is threatened.

The bill also punishes doctors who do perform abortions.

Republican sponsors of the bill say it’s necessary to protect babies.

But Democratic opponents say the move is unconstitutional and imposes on women.

The bill is now on the desk of Missouri’s governor, who is expected to sign it.
