Montana High Patrol Trooper Critically Injured in Shooting

A Montana Highway Patrol trooper was critically injured during a shooting.

It happened early Friday morning in Evaro as Trooper Wade Palmer was investigating a vehicle thought to be involved in a previous shooting.

Some time later, a second trooper arrived on scene and found Palmer shot, still in his car.

The trooper and a Missoula Police officer took Palmer to an awaiting ambulance.

He was rushed to an area hospital, but has since been airlifted to another in Salt Lake City, Utah in critical condition.

Police began an extensive search for the suspect, later identified as Jonathan Bertsch.

He was found hours later and taken into custody without incident.

State officials and the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office are now investigating the shooting.
