More Hepatitis C Infected Kidneys Being Used in Transplants

More transplant doctors are using kidneys infected with hepatitis C.

A new study found the number of transplant centers using kidneys with hepatitis C has tripled.

Before 2018, most of the infected organs went to patients who already had hepatitis c.

But since then, about 75% of infected kidneys went to patients who did not have the virus.

The study’s lead author says there are now effective drugs to treat hepatitis C, giving doctors the option of treating patients after a transplant.

That means they don’t have to throw away infected kidneys.

And patients don’t have any lingering illnesses from hep C.
