New trial date set for Brian Cohee

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — After entering a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity back in January, Brian Cohee has been given a new trial date. Cohee is accused of murdering 69-year-old Warren Barnes in March of 2021. At the time of the killing, Cohee was 19.

According to court documents, during his confession, the Grand Junction man told a detective that he had not been taking necessary medications at the time of the murder. District Attorney Dan Rubenstein told KREX the lack of an evaluation from a state hospital continues to delay the trial.

During a hearing in September, an investigator told the court he believed Cohee suffered from mental illness and depression, among other conditions.

A judge ordered Cohee to appear in court on June 21.
