Skin Cancer is largely preventable

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — “Skin cancer is largely curable and largely treatable. I tell my patients no one should die of skin cancer” Dermatologist, Dr. Shadi Kourosh said.

Sadly people, are. Coloradans on the Western slope lead active lifestyles in one of the highest elevation points in the United States which means we’re exposed to sun more than most.

Dr. Kourosh, added, “When your are outdoor at high altitudes, the sun exposure can be more intense than we realize.”

With so many outdoor activities on the Western slope, Colorado has been recognized as one of the fittest states in the country, so it’s important to incorporate skincare into your everyday routine.

“Maybe choosing a moisturizer that we apply every morning that has SPF in it” Dr. Kourosh mentioned.

Among the best sunscreens out there are mineral sunscreens.

Dr. Kourosh stated, “Mineral sunscreens are sunscreens that contain Zinker titanium as active ingredients because these will protect you against a broader range of radiation.”

But wait, there’s more.

“Visible light, heat radiation, and pollution. Which we dermatologists have been studying in recent years as a cause of DNA damage and premature aging of the skin” Dr. Kourosh attested.

Young people, don’t think your invincible. Skin cancer has no age limit.

Dr. Kourosh uttered, “I have seen skin cancer in patients as young as 20 years old, and it is the most common cancer, and the fastest-growing cancer of young people in their 20s.”

Skin cancer can be extremely fatal. Here are some risk factors.

“Family history of skin cancer, or a personal history of skin cancer, or if you’ve had intense sun exposure in your life. For example, through severe sunburns or the use of indoor tanning beds which strongly increase the chance of skin cancer” Dr. Kourosh added,

If any of those conditions apply to you, you should get a check-up once a year, if not once every few years would be fine. Dr. Kourosh wants to leave you with more piece of advice.

“An ounce of prevention is really worth a pound of cure” Dr. Kourosh stated.
