South American leaders met in Santiago, Chile Friday for the first forum for progress summit or PROSUR.
It’s a new alliance proponents say will replace Union of South American Nations.
Chilean president Sebastian Pinera welcomed his counterparts from Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina to La Moneda palace for a roundtable discussion about regional issues, including the crisis in Venezuela.
The president of Venezuela’s national assembly, Juan Guaido, who is recognized as the country’s interim president by more than 50 nations, was invited to the meeting but did not attend.
Uruguay’s president, Tabare Vazquez, a critic of the new alliance, declined the invitation.
