The captain along with the chief officer of a seized Iranian oil tanker have been arrested on suspicion of breaching E.U. sanctions relating to Syria.
According to Gibraltar police, documents and electronic devices had also been seized and are being investigated.
Iranian oil tanker Grace 1 was seized by the British Navy last Thursday on the assumption that it was carrying crude oil to Syria in violation of E.U. sanctions.
The seizure led to a threat from Iran that they would capture a British ship in retaliation.
A threat that the Islamic Republic appeared to try and make good on Wednesday when multiple boats surrounded a British tanker.
The boats reportedly tried to divert the tanker out of international waters and into Iranian waters.
A warship, the HMS Montrose wedged itself between the cargo ship and the alleged Iranian vessels and ordered them to disengage.
Those ships did comply, but the U.K. has voiced its “concern” after the incident.
